Top Plank - Mother's Mid-Century Dresser

Top Plank - Mother's Mid-Century Dresser

If you're prone to vertigo, you might want to keep right on going past this photo to the next.

My mother had a life-long interest in woodworking and furniture making.

A graduate of Great Bend Kansas High School in the late 20s, mother opted for shop instead of home economics. The next year, the school passed a rule - you guessed it - prohibiting girls from taking shop.

When my family lived in Venezuela during the halcyon days of the late 50s and early 60s, Mother bought a Shopsmith an built several pieces of furniture.

This photo shows the top of the only remaining piece. It is a dresser in a Mid-Century-Modern style made of beautiful, thick Venezuelan mahogany.

The top and sides are made from a single plank. This photo, while far from ideal, will give you a general sense of the dimension of the wood and the wood's beautiful grain and color.

As the drawers are quite shallow and the piece lived in our dining room in Caracas, I think it was meant to store table linens.

Ah, the expat life!

I estimate Mother made the piece in the late 50s or the very early 60s. By the time I was old enough to pay attention to what was going on around me in the early 60s, Mother had accomplished what she set out to do with furniture making and had moved on to ceramics in a big way.

I took this photo on August 22, 2009, but I backdated it in flickr to 1958 so it would fit in reasonable chronological order into my set on our life abroad.

Yesterday I glued the three 6' planks of pine together. This morning I added the 3' end planks and this afternoon I built and added the frame support to the bottom side of the table top.
